A community recognized by the League of American Bicyclists as a Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC):

  • welcomes bicyclists by providing encouragement and safe accommodation for all forms of cycling.

  • commits to making biking a safe, enjoyable transportation option and recreational activity.

  • values bicycling for its many benefits, which include improving citizen’s health, well-being and quality of life; reducing traffic congestion and pollution; and boosting community spirit and sense of place.

Through collaborations between town officials, advocates and businesses, a BFC addresses the areas of Engineering, Education, Encouragement, and Enforcement to improve conditions so that more people bike.

Across the U.S., interest in bicycling is skyrocketing, and it’s easy to see why.  A bike is a ticket to health, mobility, freedom, and fun.  Bicycling isn’t just a way to get from one place to another; it’s an avenue to a better life.  And when communities get on board, great things happen.  The value of the Bicycle Friendly Community designation has become clear to cities, towns, universities, businesses and families in Connecticut and across the country.  Research and experience has confirmed that being bike friendly gives a community vibrancy that attracts young adults, drives economic development and tourism, protects home values, and enhances the quality of life.  Check out the League of American Bicyclists’ road map to a Bicycle Friendly America.
